Background to Mi Shil from the Chronicles of Hwa Rang manuscript (Hwa Rang Segi).
The Korean history information I get it some from watching KBS documentary “Unravel the History” & “Hidden history”. After browsing countless Korea Journal; came across the journal for Autumn 2005 has some interest. Hwa Rang Segi – Chronicles of Hwa Rang written by Bak Chung Hwa. There is this particular known book discovered in Busan of the transcript edition Chronicles of Hwa Rang written by Silla historian Kim Dae Moon in the late 7th century. Although it seems to be transcribe by Bak Chung Hwa who then was working for the Japanese Royal library under the Japanese imperialism. There is 2 kind of book to be found, the original & the concise. The concise is one fifth of the original. There is lot of argument to its authenticity contends to be real or fabricated but we are not in the field of expertise to argue or qualify to fore or against the manuscript in question. Let us leave that to the historian & scholars. It is bases of these manuscripts that the drama takes its bases on & contend, although may be some doctored involves but one can’t miss that it is a good story to tell. We just take it as it is a good read story book
The manuscript contains 15 chapters of Hwa Rang with Introduction; Wihwarang; Mijinbu; Morang; Ihwarang; Sadaham; Sejong; Seol won Rang; Moon Noh (Munno); Biborang Mi Saeng; Hajong; Bori; Yong Chu (Kim Yong Chu); Horim & Kim Yu Shin. Mi Shil is mentioned in these chapters. Several of these are already characters in the drama
In the manuscript Chronicles of Hwa Rang from what is gather from reading, lots of literature on it especially the historian scholar debates on the authenticity of whether it is genuine or it is a forgery of a person with immense imagination or what implication that it is politically correct . Here is what I had have comprehended from my reading. In the manuscript King Jin Heung has established a group of elite of man & woman & selected leader. It started with 2 beauty & given the title Won Hwa (Original flower) that is of outstanding ability & beauty But due to jealousy & scorn, that what you get have when woman are at top position battering for favours. The King Jin Heung finally disbanded & foreclosure it & resume it with establishment with men & hence name Hwa Rang lead by Pungwolju a male version of Won Hwa
The manuscripts extracts there is 15 putative Pungwolju, Lord of Hwa Rang for training & Custom from the 1st Pungwolju Wihwarang to Kim Yu Shin. It seems there are 32 of these Pungwolju, the last is Singong
It is written in account that Hwa Rang having different faction vying for power & influence of Hwa Rang with scandalous stories regarding sexual favours & interpersonal relationship of Hwa Rang with individual of higher & lower status. The salacious stories of “perverse sexual relations,” such as more powerful Hwa Rang coercing the wives of the weak or social inferiors into having sex and the cuckolding of the Silla King (this will not meet the television ratings if shown)
Hwa Rang is a selection of young man of attractive countenance & appropriate behaviour & form a counsel what is called Pungwoldo (the way of Hwa Rang). In that there is a split between Pungwolju & creation of another position Guk Seon (State sylph). King Jin Heung will command this nobles youth of Pungwoldo to arm if needed be. When mission a dire commando espionage on Baekje & Gorguyeo , this youth with attractive faces will dolled up in attractive cosmetic
Now we get to the background source of this drama from the Chronicles of Hwa Rang manuscripts also allude to the existence of various Hwarang cliques Mi Shil group (the ritual-oriented group), Munno group (the military-oriented group), Gaya group that is the group comprised of the former elites of conquered Gaya Confederacy, including people like Kim Yu Shin, Dae Won group, Tong Hap group, I (異) group, and Jingol group (the group promoting the rites and privileges of the people of true bone status). Munno’s clique, for instance, exemplified the warrior aspect of the Hwa Rang. Munno’s followers were purportedly called “state-protecting sylphs” (Hogukseon depicted as one of the elite Seorabeol Hwa Rang Hu Guk Seon Do, where Im Jong is Captain). However, the writer of the Hwarang Segi manuscripts disparages Munno’s followers as being hicks compared to the “men of bone-rank” who followed the previously mentioned Seol Won Rang. Seol Won Rang & his followers are referred to as belonging to the Mi Shil group because the powerful courtier woman Mi Shil exerted great influence over, if not outright dominate, the “orthodox” Hwa Rang tradition during the late sixth century.
These terms promoting the idea of an “orthodox tradition” of the Hwa Rang often appear in the context of elaborations on the splintered nature of the Hwa Rang tradition and the scheming of the powerful courtier woman Mi Shil to place a favoured person in the supreme position. There is not one unified Hwa Rang order with various bands like Kim Yu-sin’s Yonghwa Hyangdo, “Dragon-Flower Aspirants” mentioned in the Samguk sagi acting under one supreme head or ritual specialist, the Gukseon as in the traditional documents, but there are several roughly independent rival cliques vying for recognition and supremacy by having their leader made the Supreme Lord of Hwa Rang, the Pungwolju, for a season.
While factional contention probably has a longer history in Korea than is documented in the traditional historical materials, it seems odd that some facts would completely avoid or mitted in any discussion of it, especially when both record the factional problems putatively associated with the Wonhwa. This type of discourse and the factional politics like novel of the Hwarang Segi as a dramatic element that would have been appreciated by Koreans skilled in literary Chinese, who would recognize it as representative of the ordinary problems and political wrangling attendant to any Korean court over cultural issue.
For Mi Shil, here is the scandalous part. In the drama hints are given in between lines of this background story & had created what Mi Shil is now to be
It is mentioned that Mi Shil was driven out of the palace by Queen Dowager Ji So, mother & Regent of King Jin Heung. King Jin Heung was too young to rule when he ascended the throne, so his mother act as Regent then when he came to age, he became the Great Silla King in history. Mi Shil eventually married Se Jong a Jingol descend & whom Se Jong refer to as Mother. Queen Dowager Ji So is said to be King Beop Heung’s daughter & she married Ip Jong who is King Beop Heung’s younger brother & their marriage produce King Jinheung
In the manuscript Mi Shil through some poem & ballad was really in love with the 5th Pungwolju Sadaham, who happened to be the Lord of Hwa Rang of the time. 5th Pungwolju falls in love with Won Hwa Mi Shil. This comes the juicy part, when Se Jong was of marriageable age, he saw how beautiful Mi Shil & was mesmerise or spell bound & fall madly in love with her beauty instantly. Se Jong’s mother who is Queen Dowager Ji So & almighty powerful Regent, then ordered Mi Shil to marry her son Se Jong. We assume that Se Jong is her son from previous marriages
But as it seems to sound very much like all Korean drama daytime soap opera; Queen Dowager Ji So dislikes Mi Shil & her family because Mi Shil was apparently the niece of Queen Sa Do, who was King Jin Heung’s Consort. As to all family feuds between mother & daughter in law that Queen Ji So apparently or surely doesn’t get along with her own daughter-in-law, Queen Sa Do. Since Mi Shil was Queen Sa Do’s niece, it is naturally that Queen Dowager Ji So despise will boiled over her grudge towards Mi Shil. Queen Dowager Ji So only tolerate with Mi Shil since Se Jong liked her so much, but eventually, Queen Dowager Ji So kicked Mi Shil out of the palace, with scheme of palace intrigue that render her to be driven out of the palace, maybe in such cruel style that she felt injustice & came back scorning like devil incarnate.
She felt wrongly or falsely accused firstly, Mi Shil had to part & break off from her 1st love Pungwolju Sadaham she had love & royal decree to be married to some man (Se Jong) who had a domineering & controlling powerful tigress mother, & this same traditional hostile mother driven her out of the palace like a discarded trash. It probably aggravate that Mi Shil was powerless to fight against any injustice that was pounded on her. This is what we perceived in her dialogue that she swear when she returned to the palace she will not be the Mi Shil of old or the former
Then Mi Shil went back to her first love, Sadaham. But this time, Silla was in waging wars with Gaya Confederacy. You may see the resentment of Mi Shil towards Kim Seo Hyeon & Kin Yu Shin families. As to all story progress what else for Lord of Hwa Rang do in the call for battle in a war. Yes he most definitely goes to fight to the death for honour & glory of immortality for Silla. As we can see how eager the Hwa Rang thirst to go to war, so they get be enlighten immortality in that Hwa Sa Dang. Pungwolju Sadaham bids farewell to tearful Mi Shil and went into the war. Maybe may be the same farewell like, I give you a jade ornament for your protection. The same scenario as Cheon Myeong has with her husband Kim Yong Su. I have my doubt whether Mi Shil doesn’t have any more emotion to cry or her tear duct are all malfunction by now
Then Queen Dowager Ji So summons Mi Shil to return back to the palace again, because her son Se Jong was missing yearning Mi Shil that he was sick like a love sick mutt & was gravely ill and almost dying like the love sick person coughing from consumption, hemoptysis coughing litres of blood. Queen Dowager Ji So couldn’t bear to see her son Se Jong dies, so she ordered Mi Shil to come back to be the recovery antidote for her son’s illness. Mi Shil went back to be with Se Jong again, once again, she had to be separated from her true love, Sadaham.
The return Mi Shil started to change being manipulative as she has come to realized she needed political power so that nobody could ever order her around and mess up with her life again. When Sadaham returns from the war, I presume mortal wounded but his life survive by the string of hope that Mi Shil will wait for his return, search up every drop of strength to make it back alive but alas he saw that Mi Shil was gone. Sadaham was so heartbroken that he died mist probably succumb to his wounds after having no will to live. Mi Shil upon hearing the news of his death was sad & harden her heart. Then Mi Shil started using her beauty to seduce many men in order to reap the power like Grim Reaper collecting soul. King Jin Heung fancy with Mi Shil too & his wife, Queen Sa Do, sanction the liaison relationship who happened to be also Mi Shil’s aunt, it was fine as Mi Shil is family better than some other woman & also ambition to gain political power in the courts. King Jin Heung made Mi Shil the “Seju” – female Lord Chamberlain & keeper of the seal to keep her close to him at Hwa rang.
For her husband Se Jong becomes more like Mi Shil consort that the other way around since his wife is selling herself in order to put her husband to become the King. Se Jong thinks it is a good exchange as Se Jong he may think that he could be the cause & partly his fault that Mi Shil turned out the way she is now. So he just accepts her that his wife & become a monster & she had her keep man Seol Won Rang who is like his slave boy. We have seen how he sponge Mi Shil in her bath. Se Jong as for Mi Shil only had the title “official” husband & it was fine with him. Mi Shil realized how easy it was to manipulate men & obtained power, she just couldn’t stop as it was really addictive about power is that once you have it you crave have more until her ambition to become Queen, although she is no qualification to be one then forcing herself on the Kings to make her Queen. King Jinji although was put up to the throne but never made her Queen, even when she gave him a son, didn’t entitle her to that title. When she force herself to King Jinpyeong, you can see the fear & anxiety that King Jinpyeong written on his face when he had to take Mi Shil as Queen after making Queen Maya go missing & disappear. But to divine intervention Moon Noh comes to save the day by producing a very heavy pregnant Maya
King Jin Heung in his lifetime couldn’t prevent Mi Shil from destroying his household through his folly that he had gave so much power to Mi Shil. In his decree, he wanted to force Mi Shil to take tonsure into holy order, but she refuses & made a coup d’état, with King Jinji, when it didn’t suit her, pull down King Jinji & put King Jinpyeong on the throne. This is why he had to come & give the prophesy of the Mizar star
Queen Seon Deok Episode 11
Kim Yu Shin goes around the battlefield to turn every corpse he finds to identify for Deok Man. Kim Yu Shin asked where is Deok Man that she can’t died on him. Then coming to the muddy terrain frantically shouting for Deok Man & going through the corpses & relief to find that the corpses are not her. Then the last remnant Baekje soldier take his sword to attack Kim Yu Shin, who managed to defend himself by grabbing a lance to protect himself but couldn’t sustain as the Baekje soldier went on rampage attack & about to strike a lethal blow when someone picks up a bow from the mud & shot an arrow, bull eye killing the Baekje soldier instantly as the Baekje soldier fall over beside Kim Yu Shin. Kim Yu Shin then takes a look to find Deok Man with hair draping down on her last energy reserve to shot the arrow like Queen Goddess of arrow
Kim Yu Shin ran towards Deok Man who then collapse & loses to semi consciousness. Kim Yu Shin nags at her physical condition that why she was too weak to come back to the camp even if she survives as Kim Yu Shin takes her & piggy back as she rides the comforts of Kim Yu Shin shoulder & Kim Yu Shin asked Deok Man to hang in there. It seem she is not injure but merely exhausted
I will love to have watch that she gets hurt & Kim Yu Shin has to tend to her wound & opens her shirt to find bandage breast like Hua Mu Lan
Joo Bang & Go Do wandering in the grassland fields as Go Do said that they are wandering in circles. Joo Bang said that Baekje border should be nearby here. Go Do said they are really lost since they don’t even see any sight of Baekje or Silla soldiers at all that he is really getting tired of “running away” Then Joo Bang finds that he is speaking in a Baekje accent as they practice. Joo Bang miss his step & tumbles down a slope. Go Bang comes down after him & asked if he alright. Joo Bang said does he look alright to him having tumbles the slope like that. Go Do said that he should have been more careful in his footsteps while Joo bang asked that Go Do could have prevent him from falling. As they bickering, Dae Pung & the rest of the Yonghwa Hyangdo spotted them & foiled this escape. Dae Pung & the rest of the Yonghwa Hyangdo are so glad to see them alive
Joo Bang said that the battle was so intense, then Go Do went on his Baekje accent as Joo Bang knocks so sense to Go Do to mind his speech. Joo Bang explained that they have been fighting with so many Baekje soldier that the accent had caught on for Go Do & all of them had a good joke
Ha Jong informs King Jinpyeong that Sok Ham fortress is already been taken. King Jinpyeong asked whether they have ascertained that the fortress had been retaken & under control. Ha Jong said that through they ploy that has play out Baekje forces to bait here & there until they are so confuse. Mi Shil said that Seol Won Rang deceit stratagem had work successfully. Cheon Myeong asked about the status of Kim Seo Hyeon. Ha Jong showed no concern that maybe Kim Seo Hyeon is still trapped in fighting by surrounding Baekje forces at Ah Mak fortress. King Jinpyeong asked whether reinforcement had been deployed to assist Kim Seo Hyeon. The Minister said that it is not feasible & wise to sent reinforcement to Kim Seo Hyeon due to security risk.
Se Jong concur that the Sok Ham fortress that they had retaken must be guarded & protect from all sieges as the main Baekje force are full retreated or pull out from Silla, so there is danger is lurking into he midst. They are in no condition of situation to deploy troops anywhere. Ha Jong claims at Seol Won Rang had sends a messenger to give the order a retreat. The Eunuch raise the surprise that it is only a messenger to send the order. Kim Yong Chu said that Sok Ham fortress to Ah Mak fortress is filled with Baekje forces, will just a single messenger be safe & smoothly relay the message through. Ha Jong then realise the purpose what Seol Won Rang’s intention in having Kim Yu Shin with him. Ha Jong assures the King Jinpyeong that the messenger send to deliver the order is Kim Yu Shin, son of Kim Seo Hyeon. Princess Cheon Myeong & King Jinpyeong are surprise that Kim Yu Shin was to be risk with this dire mission. Ha Jong said that since Kim Seo Hyeon is at grave risk, his son will do all he can to save his father from the gates of death

Cheon Myeong advertise that without reinforcement or if Kim Yu Shin doesn’t make it through the defense lines of Baekje, Kim Seo Hyeon’s forces are all sitting duck waiting to be slaughter. Even if it said that they had send Kim Yu Shin there is no guarantee that he may able to reach Kim Seo Hyeon. Cheon Myeon ask her father to decree to deploy an order to help Kim Seo Hyeon with the retreat order. Mi Shil is against that request & can’t permit it from happening. Eul Jae said that presently if Silla send an army to Baekje territory, it will add fuel & escalate the conflict further. Mi Shil concurs that retaking Sok Ham fortress had resulted in driven the Baekje force out of Silla. It will be eminent for Silla to end this conflict the soonest the possible is their greatest benefits. Mi Shil stares at Cheon Myeong to give her the “checkmate” look. Cheon Myeong recalls the death of her husband Kim Yong Su
Kim Seo Hyeon tells his commanding officer that they are totally surrounded by enemy forces & as they location haven’t be detect by the opposite but doesn’t guarantee that they can hide & conceal their location for long. The enemy will be soon know & find out about their location in a moment notice of time. Kim Seo Hyeon orders the order of retreat, but to camouflage their retreat safely, they must deceit & lure the enemy in believing otherwise, so he needs to have a platoon that will become Chu Yi Gun (the bait). Kim Seo Hyeon said a platoon with good military tactics & background & even in their death will have great benefits to the nation, that only be called for the service of the Hwa Rang

In the Chinese drama serial “Han Wu Da Di”, the warfare used by Han Wudi and Wei Qin seems to use watch a lot of strategy and tactics that involves “encirclement”, which in Chinese is called “bao chao or “Yu Hui “. Basically, you dispatch a few cavalry & infantry regiments to move forth and back within a certain region. The enemy scouts will discover it and report it to their commander. The commander will be deceived to think the main force is there and will mobilize his main force to attack these cavalry troops. However, this is just a ploy to lure the troop. Actually, you hide your main force some else and then move roundabout from the back as we will see in this drama that it is to retreat from enemy troops from behind their back. The bait must be strong enough to play a loss, meaning losing and running until the enemy is certain.
Al Cheon volunteers that Bi Cheon Ji Do & Yonghwa Hyangdo to take the rear guard. Yeo Il Cheon praise that this is a suicidal mission entrusted on them to safeguard the main army. Kim Seo Hyeon tells them that the survival of the Silla army rest upon their shoulder & wish them “Godspeed” on their endeavour. Al Cheon is give the command to lead Rear guard & hands him the seal of authority. Then Kim Seo Hyeon tells that Silla will remember their achievement forever debted to them on the valiantly fought for Silla freedom. Yonghwa Hyangdo finds that the situation is too eerie in silence as they waited outside. The Bi Cheon Ji Do wounded looks depress

Al Cheon assures that their kinsman will eb taken care of after their death then draw his swords & cut the wounded down.
Ancient warfare leave no wounded or no man behind. It is usually means death as they don’t want the soldier to be taken prisoners. Although this day it is a pledge to leave no soldier behind whether wounded or dead, it must be brought back at all cost.
Yonghwa Hyangdo get 1st glance on what is about to happened. Deok Man asked what is going on here. Kim Yu Shin stops Deok Man from interfering. Al Cheon said that they have been given the mission of being Chu Yi Gun, they can’t have the burden of the wounded laden their mission as they need to be fit to able to lure the enemy’s attention from the main army, so he explained that they can carry their wounded with them, so they need to cut them off so that they will not be taken prisoners. Deok Man said it is better to be prisoner that to be killed by their own. Al Cheon can’t have the interrogated & leak information of the main army’s retreat. Deok Man said that Al Cheon have no right to take his Nang Do’s life. Al Cheon it is not his decision but military orders. It is also the principals & the vow of Bi Cheon Ji Do. Al Cheon reiterate that they as Yonghwa Hyangdo is not exempted from that military order. Al Cheon orders all wounded to be killed
I would think that Yonghwa Hyangdo has an opposite view of that vow is they are swear to carry from the field of battle their dead and wounded. & leave no one behind like the present marines. The principals of Yonghwa Hyangdo is that they do not abandon their dead and wounded on the battlefield. That why they practice with the bale of grained
They spot a platoon of Baekje soldier & prepare to take them down in one strike. They managed to let the Baekje lone soldier off to report back to his commanders. As anticipate the soldier bring back the news that the Silla army is mobilising & attack their lines. Baekje General Gu Bae is surprise that they should attack since he wanted to look for their location whereabout & asked where was the attack. Soldier report that they attack west of this region. Baekje General Gu Bae mobilise his army to meet them there. Al Cheon do another attack on the Baekje infantry, then Silla raise the alarm with shouts in chorus as they roars Silla army is coming & beating war drum to mimics the sound of man of thousand imitate noise of an attack. A stratagem strategy use by Zhuge Liang straw boat borrow arrows refers to the act of using someone’s strength against him or her. Baekje army panics. Al Cheon asked to retreat at once. As they retreat it is pursuit by a large Baekje army on their heels.
Shi Ryeol falls while running & Deok man realise that he is wounded, the rest comes back to pick him up as Shi Ryeol tell them to leave him behind & die. Deok Man refuses to leave Shi Ryeol behind. If he doesn’t get up, they all will perish because of him. Baekje army fires at them as they pick up Shi Ryeol to make a run for it as the Baekje force roars behind their heels
Cheon Myeong calls on Mi Shil that she will like to participate in discussion of her decision in political affairs, she wants her permission. Mi Shil finds her cold. Kim Seo Hyeon & Kim Yu Shin are said to be her vassal, how can she forget the memories & forsake them so quickly. Cheon Myeong said that she had learn diligent from Mi Shil. Cheon Myeong said that those who return & those who don’t make it back, she will forever grateful. Mi Shil is taken aback from what she is hearing from Cheon Myeong as she comment that Cheon Myeong had change, but however her close knit relationship with Kim Seo Hyeon & Kim Yu Shin could be otherwise perceive, Cheon Myeong interrupts to said that she too will take to preaching the idiom of Yok Cham Gol Dan. Her vassals are her flesh but she will have to abandon for the common good of the nation & the destruction of the enemy . Mi Shil doesn’t know how to reacted to Cheon Myeong since she can’t read Cheon Myeong anymore. Cheon Myeong leaves
Yok Cham Gol Dan – Sacrifice & forsake ones flesh to break the bones of the enemy. Sacrifice give & abandon of what we cherish in return for better gain
Cheon Myeong goes to see Eul Jae & asked that she wants to see all military correspondences for this conflict. Eul Jae said Mi Shil will use all her political power to prevent Cheon Myeong from reading them. Cheon Myeong said it will be difficult to obtain once Seol Won Rang comes back from the conflict. She needs to see them before then. Eul Jae will tries his best to obtain them. Eul Jae leave then Cheon Myeong asked whether her mother Queen Maya had left for the excursion. The palace maid said that Queen Maya had left for the temple that Queen Mother Man Ho is hermitage 1st thing at dawn. Princess Man Myeong is accompanied in tandem with Queen Maya
Before proceed I will like to give you a genealogy of how Princess Man Myeong is link to King Jinpyeong. Here goes King Jin Heung married Queen Sa Do (Mi Shil’s Aunt) & the union had Prince Dong Ryun (King Jinpyeong’s father) & Prince Geum Ryun (King Jinji – 25th ruler of Silla, Kim Yong Su & Kim Yong Chu’s father & soon Bi Dam as well). Queen Man Ho initially married Sook Heul Jong who is King Jin Heung’s younger brother & the union produce Princess Man Myeong. Then I assume that Sook Heul Jong (King Jin Heung’s younger brother) died. Queen Man Ho then marries Prince Dong Ryun in which this marriage union produce King Jin Pyeong
Hence, it is accurate to said that King Jin Pyeong and Princess Man Myeong are half siblings (same mother, different father). But also that she is also an Aunt on his father’s side as well, since her father is his biologically his Granduncle
Now there is also a Romeo & Juliet story with this couple of star-crossed lovers in which I will attempt to explain. This is from the Chronicles of Hwa Rang (Hwa Rang Segi).
In some episode back ago, I think Episode 7, Mi Shil protest of letting Lord Kim Seo Hyeon back to Seorabeol as Kim Seo Hyeon is from the Gaya Confederacy’s Royal household of King Gu Hae. Personally Mi Shill have person vendetta over the Gaya Confederacy in which was already explained above. Then Cheon Myeong tells her that it is the Royal Affairs of the household & nothing to that she needs to be concern. Mi Shil no matter how much political power she had reap through the years, she had never be accepted as family, this is what she aspire & it had deluded her. Mi Shil mentioned that Queen Sado (Mi Shil’s Aunt) had banish or exile Kim Seo Hyeon from ever to return to Seorabeol. What make Queen Sado to do such drastic action was Kim Seo Hyeon & Princess Man Myeong happened to have falls madly in love with each other, but Queen Man Ho the Princess Man Myeong’s mother opposed their union. This is because Kim Seo Hyeon was a Gaya royal descent from the royal household of King Gu Hae. Although Gaya royals, after being annexed by Silla, were given aristocrats status in the Silla society as Jingol. But the rivalry & the bitter resentment among each other are still have strong prejudices. Since they are seen like a 2nd class aristocrats of a conquered nation, it is not good qualification as a future son. But Princess Man Myeong goes out of the palace every night to meet with Kim Seo Hyeon. (it is also sound like the Silla royalty favourite night activities, Cheon Myeong meets in midnight rendezvous with Deok Man in incognito)

Then suddenly rumour spread to the point where little kids were singing ballad about it like nursery rhythms. It now sounds like the Ballad of Seo Dong? Well same scriptwriter, what do you expect. Then Queen Sado who was the principal Queen was not amused with the ballad thus giving bad publicity for the Royal household, so through pressure by Queen Sado to Queen Man Ho (King Jinheung’s consort & the Princess Man Myeong’s mother); she had to force King Jinpyeong to make a decision about this matter, in reluctance King Jinpyeong exiles or transfer Kim Seo Hyeon away from Seorabeol, to a northern frontier region Manno Province to be the Governor. When Princess Man Myeong heard this, she escaped from the palace and followed Kim Seo Hyeon all the way to Manno Province & marries him. Queen Man Ho Princess Man Myeong’s mother got very angry that her daughter disobey her & hence disowned her daughter.
Queen Maya announce her present to Queen Man Ho. Then she showed Princess Man Myeong in. Queen Man Ho is surprise to see her daughter Princess Man Myeong after a long absence & tells Queen Maya wasn’t alone in this visit. Queen Maya coaxes her mother in law Queen Man Ho to accept greeting from Princess Man Myeong. Princess Man Myeong pays greeting to her mother & begs for forgiveness. It was a teary reunion as Queen Maya tells that it has been 20 years since the mother & daughter last met & asked the Queen Man Mo to forgive her daughter. Queen Man Mo complains that her daughter never once came back to see her these years, what is now to asked for forgiveness. Queen Man Ho relent
I also wonder if Princess Man Myeong is pregnant. It some way in the drama Kim Seo Hyeon & Princess Man Myeong need to produce a daughter Kim Mun Hui for Kim Chun Chu (King Muyeol) to marry
Kim Ying Chu is discussing the odds with Cheon Myeong of Kim Yu Shin send in as messenger. He said it will be difficult & dangerous to sneak behind enemies lines & asked what they are suppose to do. Cheon Myeong takes no heed of Kim Yong Chu anxiety. Cheon Myeong understand his anxiety & asked him to retire to bed. Kim Yong Chu asking what with Cheon Myeong’s behaviour & asked whether she had abandon Kim Seo Hyeon & Kim Yu Shin for good. Cheon Myeong in turn ask what does he want her to do then. Reinforcement will risk deepen the conflict; it is impossible to sneak behind enemies lines. Cheon Myeong asked Kim Yong Chun what else she can do about it. Kim Yong Chu also doesn’t have any answer for her. Cheon Myeong said that when her husband Kim Yong Su’s death, does Kim Yong Chu know how guilty stricken & upset she was over his passing. Does he know how upsetting was it for her to accept Kim Yong Su’s demise? She then swears & vows that this incident will never repeat itself again, it must not ever again.
Al Cheon kills another of his wounded Hwa Rang then as the body is being drag away. Joo Bang tells Shi Ryeol to stay focus as Go Do tells him that Shi Ryeol also classified as wounded. Guk San Heon asked how can he carry on fighting with the wound like that. Shi Ryeol asked that he was to left behind. Dae Pung grabs Shi Ryeol collar but Deok Man stop them. Kim Yu Shin approaches as they greet him but Kim Yu Shin asked what is the matter. Dae Pung wants to tell Kim Yu Shin but Joo bang interrupts to say that there is nothing the matter & what is there. Joo Bang asked are they going to stall her for a long time. Kim Yu Shin asked for beat patrol. Joo bang suggest Shi Ryeol & Deok Man as they look like they still have energy reserve in their tanks. Kim Yu Shin said that Bi Cheon Ji Do is covering the southeast, so they assign to cover the northeast
Deok Man goes but turns back & asked if Kim Yu Shin concurs the same thought as Al Cheon. Kim Yu Shin said it is military order. Deok Man asked not of the military order but his earnest view on the matter. Kim Yu Shin firmly tells that a soldier in wars stands only obey military orders from superiors
Military discipline and effectiveness is built on the foundation of obedience to orders. Cadre are taught to obey, immediately and without question, orders from their superiors, right from day-one of boot camp. Military members who fail to obey the lawful orders of their superiors risk serious consequences. It makes it a crime for a military member to willfully disobey a superior commissioned officer. In fact, during times of war, a military member who willfully disobeys a superior commissioned officer can be sentenced to death. It’s clear, under military law, that military members can be held accountable for crimes committed under the guise of “obeying orders,” and there is no requirement to obey orders which are unlawful. I think that what Deok Man’s arguments is that killing the wounded is deem unlawful
Deok Man & Shi Ryeol beat patrol in the rain. Shi Ryeol gets a shock seeing corpses. Deok Man assures that they are all dead. Deok Man asked him to get up as the Baekje army is just behind them. Shi Ryeol asked Deok Man to leave him be. Shi Ryeol knows that Deok man doesn’t like him, she may want him dead then shout for Deok Man to give up on him. Deok man gave a slap across his face & said that she despise him then wanted to give him a punched to knock his marbles into placing. Deok Man said that she had her fear that she will die because of his fault & the only way to prevent that is to kill him off, because of this fact reality, she hate him for it. This is to prove that what Al Cheon had said is the truth. Deok man scold him for being a fool. Al Cheon is trying to motivate us by using fear & that man like him had that fear. Shi Ryeol said that this is driving him crazy, he doesn’t know what came over him, he is ashamed & frustrated that he keeps his attention focus that why he is afraid. Shi Ryeol is it wrong to feel frightened
Deok Man said that it is not wrong to fear that all of them had the same fear. The fear is so great that it is suffocating. Deok man said his crime is to survive without doing anything about it. Deok Man asked Shi Ryeol what is the purpose are they fighting wars here, right now, is it because for Silla to remember them forever or that we are doing this for the main army to retreat. A dog will roll laughing upon hearing this. Deok man said if they don’t fight, they will not survive to live. Deok Man said that Shi Ryeol want to survive then he needs to fight
Then a dying soldier holds Deok man foot. Deok Man asked what happened here, The dying soldier asked whether she was from Al Cheon’s troop in which she affirms. Deok Man & Shi Ryeol seen running back. The message is from Kim Seo Hyeon, the rendezvous point to meet is now being exterminated & needs to relay this to Al Cheon. Deok man shouts that they need to retreat from here. Deok man said that this place is dangerous, the Baekje army is out to annihilated us. At this rate they will soon be destroy, Deok Man gave the message to Al Cheon. Then Al Cheon gets shot by Baekje archers. Kim Yu Shin does a roll count & finds that they are now down to 35 men that are battle fit. Al Cheon already injure by arrow said that it is all that left from their troops. Kim Yu Shin said that 28 men had died only left 35 men. Al Cheon had for the casualty list. Deok Man looks at Shi Ryeol. Al Cheon gives his authority seal to Kim Yu Shin to accept it as Al Cheon sustained injury & must be deal with according to military order as he not fit to lead anymore.
Then Al Cheon called out to his Hwa Rang, then asked one of his Hwa Rang Pyeong Jo to kill him off. His Hwa Rang refuse but Al Cheon said that he no longer can fight anymore. Pyeong Jo draws his sword reluctantly. Al Cheon tells Pyeong to have courage & slash him down. As he about to strike Al Cheon, Deok Man shouts “NO”. Al Cheon asked how can a mere Nang Do comes & butt into his affairs. Kim Yu Shin asked Deok Man to standdown. Deok Man said that this can’t be so. It is mad in what they are doing. Kim Yu Shin shouts Deok Man to standdown
Standdown (military) is a temporary stop of offensive military action or a suspension and relaxation from an alert state or a state of readiness.
Deok Man said that if another Hwa Rang were to be killed unintended, they will not see the military orders. Al Cheon asked what she implying that they didn’t see. Deok Man eats the military order then tells that she only the person who know about the Military orders is her & that is already inside her. If Al Cheon wants to kill her off or the wounded & should it be all the rest of them. Al Cheon might as well do that right now. Then the other is to finds an alternative that will save them all from this predicament. Deok Man asked Al Cheon to choose. Kim Yu Shin draws his swords at Deok Man of being insubordination. Deok Man said that Kim Yu Shin came to identify the bodies after the battle therefore he also found the wounded & he also carried her on his back. Deok Man said that Kim Yu Shin trained them hard to battle to survive at all cost. In order to carry our injure comrades, he told them to carry bale of grain stack on their backs to run up back & forth the mountain. Deok Man said that physically she will not able to carry a person on her back, she train hard by wearing sand bags on her leg to practice & trained. Kim Yu Shin trained her that this is the principals of Yonghwa Hyangdo. Kim Yu Shin relax his sword
Al Cheon tells that they are now at war, do reasoning of principals will help them out of their predicament. Deok Man shouts that this is the very principal she believe in that why she train so hard for it. A person may force another person to lie & cheat in order to pledge loyalty. Al Cheon said that this is absurdly inept over their current bleak situation. They don’t even have the physical condition to carry the wounded for another 10 metres. Deok Man asked to look on the real fact, that Al Cheon will not go the distance with his men, even it is only a mile a day without sheer loyalty.
Deok Man kneels to Al Cheon to asked him not to give up on their loyalty & to give them some hope that their loyalty is worth to fight for. Why do Al Cheon keep cutting them off in loses when they had the heart to fight on. How can Al Cheon be cruel to them as they already had the instill fear in them. How can he treat them as comrades as the method to imply survival. Deok Man said they want to survive & will fight on. Al Cheon said that they can band together & survives this. Deok Man said that there is always a method of way, that is the responsibility of a Military commander & in that the cadre had pledge their undying loyalty to. Then the wounded rally behind Deok Man that they wish to fight on indefinitely even until death & not to give up on them. Al Cheon orders that the wounded be deal in accordance & asked Kim Yu Shin to execute the orders, but Kim Yu Shin said that the right of command authority now rest with him. Kim Yu Shin said that he will not allow Al Cheon or the rest who are here to die in vain
Al Cheon asked to talk sense to Kim Yu Shin that the injured casualty that they have able to take on the Baekje forces. If Kim Yu Shin blunders in his decision then all will perish. Kim Yu Shin stubbornly stand firm on his decision. Joo Bang treating the wounded in dressing their wounds. Joo bang how are they going to carry all of them to Silla with Baekje pursue them on their heels. Kim Yu Shin looks at the wounded. Joo Bang then notice that Go Do is pounding the wrong compound in the medicine & reprimanded Go Do for not properly identify the herb plants Hyeop Juk Do & his carelessness. It must be a poisonous plant with effect like prunasin and other cyanogenic glycosides.

If they want to evade an attack, Al Cheon is correct in sense but the Kim Yu Shin said if it were to reverse it as a pre-emptive strike. Kim Yu Shin consult with Joo Bang that what they have is Hyeop Juk Do with them as Jo Bang affirm it

Kim Yu Shin opted to use guerilla warfare tactics to meet with the Baekje army. The guerrilla focuses on organising in small units, dependent on the support of the local population. Tactically, the guerrilla army attacks its enemy in small, repetitive attacks from the opponents center of gravity with a view to reducing casualties and becoming an intensive, repetitive strain on the enemies resources, forcing an over-eager response which will both anger their own supporters and increase support for the guerrilla, thus forcing the enemy to withdraw.
Kim Yu Shin set up an small obstacle in the path of the Baekje army for an ambush & waits for the passing Baekje army. The Captain asked what it is but the officer doesn’t know what it is. The Captain asked that the obstacles be remove from the path. A fuse is set. It is obviously a spark fuse like that require gunpowder, but gunpowder was not invented until the 9th century. The fire start then create a cloud of smoke that emitted some toxin fume smoke. Then the soldiers suffer smoke inhalation & smarting eyes. The Captain realise it is Hyeop Guk Do & it is poisonous. In the chaos, Kim Yu Shin gives the order to attack with arrows & shoot the unexpected Baekje as the Captain sound the retreat. Kim Yu Shin that the retreating Baekje will retreat to where there is water to wash the smarting eyes
Al Cheon & his Hwa Rang waiting underwater to await the unexpected Baekje forces as they tries to wash their eyes off from the smart as they stealth their way through the water. As the Captain asked his soldier to hurry with their wash, Al Cheon & the others sprung an unconventional attack & surprise the off guard Baekje forces. The Baekje force were annihilated as they were preoccupied. Kim Yu Shin & Deok Man with the rest of the Yonghwa Hyangdo killed the Baekje forces. Then it is all out do or die battle. Shi Ryeol finds that Deok Man is being attack & then goes to stab the Baekje soldier to save her. The rest fought vigorously. Then Shi Ryeol prepares to shoot a charging cavalry captain & shot him down as he fell from his horse, the other shouts that the Captain in down & to sound the retreat but was cut down by Bi Cheon Ji Do from escaping. They cheer as the last Baekje soldier is killed. Shi Ryeol sustain injury from the battle as he collapse. Deok Man runs to his aide. Joo Bang tries to give him emergency 1st aid as they loosen his belt & Deok Man sees that Shi Ryeol is hemorrhaging profusely & Shi Ryeol losing conscious & vomiting of blood. Shi Ryeol is transfer to the bank as Joo Bang tries to apply compression to stop bleeding
Deok Man call out to Shi Ryeol to keep him conscious. Shi Ryeol apologise that he looks like he can’t make it through this time. Kim Yu Shin brushes him as talking nonsense as they will definitely able to bring him back. Shi Ryeol said that he became like that because he was afraid. In his dying breath he feel that he needs to live because he can’t let his mother be left alone in this world. He had fear that this may come & he can’t look after his mother anymore, that was his biggest fear. Deok Man said all of them here are also frightened & assures him to discuss this further when they are back in Seorabeol. Since he needs to be cut down by the sword, this is of no matter. Shi Ryeol said he had no fear & had done well & then expires. Joo Bang cries. Deok Man insist to wake up Shin Ryeol in her sense of denial as she vigorously shakes Shi Ryeol. Deok Man scream & wail for Shi Ryeol to get up & go home. Kim Yu Shin picks up Deok Man who is on the brink of traumatise breakdown. Deok Man begs to let her go as she plea with Joo Bang to do something for Shi Ryeol. Deok Man weep profusely & moans for Shi Ryeol’s death. Al Cheon came by & looked
A quiet walk after Shi Ryeol death. Kim Yu Shin asked Deok Man not to blame herself for Shi Ryeol’s death. Deok Man asked why she should blame herself as Shi Ryeol didn’t die for her. Kim Yu Shin said he did not but she had the look of such remorse & regret written on her face. Deok Man said that she had something to say to him but she didn’t have the opportunity to do so. Deok Man wanted to tell he was really great back there. Silla biggest timid mouse Shi Ryeol had slayed the Baekje Captain. Shi Ryeol was really great. Kim Yu Shin said that Shi Ryeol is indeed a heroic warrior. Deok Man said she had no tear to shed after Shi Ryeol’s death. Deok Man said she had killed so many people, but she feel no emotion, she really don’t know what is everything anymore now. Kim Yu Shin said that he felt the same way too, the best thing for them right now, is that they are still alive. Deok Man said that she will survive so that Shi Ryeol will live in her
Mi Saeng comes back to report to his sister about Cheon Myeong seating at the meeting of the Noble counsel as she tries to makes amendments to the organisation human resource of state affairs especially defense & creating upsets. Mi Saeng mocks that the military personnel are all their cronies. Mi Saeng tells that Cheon Myeong had propose a portfolio changes in the designation in the Defence. Mi Shil asked about the situation in Kim Seo Hyeon. Mi Saeng tell that they is still no word from them. Mi Saeng invites her sister to the palace, since the army is returning & celebration will follow thereafter Noon Gong Haeng Sang rewards will be dispense

Eul Jae reports that Baekje had already be push out from their border & all is well. King Jinpyeong asked about the situation in Ah Mak fortress. Eul Jae said that they are people place in Ah Mak fortress waiting but there is no sign of returnees. Mi Shil surprise there is no reaction from Cheon Myeong. Mi Shil said that it is a tragic for Silla that there is no sign of survivors returning from the front. Mi Shil tells that they will be forever glorified in the history of Silla. They are in our memories especially the family of Kim Seo Hyeon who lead so bravely to Ah Mak fortress. Mi Shil said that they should be awarded titles of land so reimburse their contribution deed to the nation & suggest that a shrine to commemorate their death & memorial tablet be place there. Cheon Myeong suggest that their memorial tablet be place appropriately at Hwa Sa Dang. Ha Jong said that Hwa Sa Dang is a sacred shrine that only Hwa Rang can place their memorial tablet there. No matter what, Kim Seo Hyeon can’t place his memorial tablet in Hwa Sa Dang, since he had been stripped of all royal status for his wrong doing. Se Jong concurs that King Jinpyeong 7 Princess Cheon Myeong had force to bring back Kim Seo Hyeon to Seorabeol, but they still haven’t seek or hear the approval from Queen Man Ho.
Queen Maya’s presence is announced. Mi Shil is surprise that Queen Maya would come to court. Queen Maya with Princess Man Myeong. Queen Maya said that they just came from Queen Mother Man Ho’s hermitage. King Jinpyeong asked that Princess Man Myeong met their mother. Princess Man Myeong reports that Queen Mother Man Ho had forgiven them for their past action. Queen Mother Man Ho has given her consent to Kim Seo Hyeon & her marriage. Mi Shil was surprise as Cheon Myeong is glad. King Jinpyeong is happy that his mother had finally relented & receive their marriage with open arms. Princess Man Myeong said that she has a letter to the King from their mother. King Jinpyeong reads it. King Jinpyeong tells that Queen Man Ho has reinstated Kim Seo Hyeon’s lineage as Jingol & consent the union of Princess Man Myeong & him, so all right will be bestow to him as he is deem fit. Mi Shil loses this bout & had to congratulate this good news. Mi Shil tells that the reimbursement as a Jingol will be 3000 acres of land in Ahnyeong. His memorial service will be done for 7 days & his memorial tablet be place at Hwa Sa Dang as entitled. Cheon Myeong asked Mi Shil what if Kim Seo Hyeon survive & return to Seorabeol. Mi Shil had to say that his Jingol status is reinstated, he is entitled to the privileges of his befitting status. Cheon Myeong suggest the position as Vice Defence Minister will be befitting of that status, since his status is reinstate, he will sit & participate at Hwa Baek (Counsel of nobles). Princess Cheon Myeong asked that the land originally be bestow by King Jin Heung to the Kim Mu Ryeop; father of Kim Seo Hyeon to be rightfully be return to Kim Seo Hyeon. The land of Ahnyeong, Samyeong & Daegaya must be return to him. Mi Shil had to concur that it will be befitting if Kim Seo Hyeon ever returns from battle
Seok Bum tells that Kim Seo Hyeon is missing as they were ambushed. It is because of the chaos the army was dispersed & shatter. Seo Bum said that he has send a squad to look for Kim Seo Hyeon whereabouts & wait a while for news. Al Cheon assures that all will be well. Deok Man over hears them as Kim Yu Shin looks worried
Ha Jong is upset that things didn’t work out in their favour. Mi Saeng said that Princess Cheon Myeong is riding the fate of Kim Seo Hyeon as a gamble. Se Jong said that Kim Seo Hyeon will not survive this war. Ha Jong assures that the Baekje army will be really angry & will want his blood. Mi Saeng said how can a force of 3000 go against the Baekje army at Ah Mak fortress & survives to return to Seorabeol. This is why Seo Won Rang is a great strategist, victory from war & get rid of the problem as well
Kim Yu Shin is pacing as news that the Baekje army is close at hand & had set camp. Seok Bum said that they are now surrounded. Seok Bum said that don’t even know where the main army is locate as now. Al Cheon asked whether that they are end of their wits. Kim Yu Shin said is that they must survive to return to Silla. Seok Bum asked for the authority since Al Cheon is not fit to command. Kim Yu Shin hands it to Seok Bum with Al Cheon consent
Joo Bang discuss the odds as they know that they are surrounded. Dae Pung said that Baekje will attack their position like a waves of attacks. Go Do said that Silla border is just in front of them. Deok Man kills the grim atmosphere to try to cheer them up with encouragement as Silla is so near at sight now that they want to give up now
Seok Bum tells the troop that their mission to be bait & lure is over & also they are also encircle & surrounded by enemies. They now had to pass through the enemies to get back to Silla. Survival depends on them being unison. Seok Bum calls Deok Man out over the news that Deok Man had gone against & disobey military orders & draw the sword on her. Seok Bum asked why Al Cheon didn’t deal with her as she attempt a mutiny. Seok Bum will make example of Deok Man to follow order of a superior officer. Seok Bum strike his swords but it is stop by Al Cheon. Al Cheon said that this is not the time t be speaking of principals. Seok Bum said that he is now in authority. Al Cheon went down to kneel to tells that the people who have survive here are all saved by Deok Man. Al Cheon said that if Seok Bum slay Deok Man, he will not get the loyalty of the people here. Kim Yu Shin goes down on his knees & said that Deok Man indeed disobey orders & is a serious offence, but can this offence be dealt when they return to Seorabeol. Seok Bum asked what had got into them. Then other soldiers asked to be killed as he is alive due to Deok Man. He will not standby to see Deok Man be killed. Yonghwa Hyangdo chorus to kill them as well. Seok Bum said that he will able to kill them all who disobey. Kim Yu Shin stood up as he is about to draw his sword at Seok Bum but Deok Man stops him by kneeling down & asked him not to do it. Kim Yu Shin relent then asked that Yonghwa Hyangdo dies in glory of the war to redeem their sins. Kim Yu Shin & his Yonghwa Hyangdo will hold the enemy force for 2 hours for the rest of them to make their escape back to the Silla border
Kim Yu Shin hands Al Cheon his regimental colour & Al Cheon pray that Kim Yu Shin & Yonghwa Hyangdo will return back alive.
